Samsung integrated support for the classic S Pen into its Galaxy Z Fold series starting with the second iteration. Since then, all Z Fold devices offered stylus support until last year. In 2024, the Galaxy Z Fold SE dropped support for the accessory, and the latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 did too. That said, it’s possible that S Pen support could return in future Galaxy Z Fold generations.
Samsung’s stylus support made the Galaxy Z Fold a worthy successor to the “Galaxy Note” experience. The Galaxy S Ultra has already offered the feature for years and has massive screens. However, a folding screen offers much greater scope for exploiting productivity and creativity using the S Pen. Due to technological limitations, Samsung sells it as a separate accessory, though. A Galaxy Z Fold with an integrated slot for the “digital pen” hadn’t yet arrived—and it probably never will.
S Pen support could return in future Galaxy Z Fold phones, even with dedicated slot
That said, it seems that the story of Samsung’s stylus is not definitively over for its foldables. According to a report from South Korean media ETNews , Samsung is actively exploring integrating S Pen technology directly into future Galaxy Z Fold models. This wouldn’t just mean official support for the stylus. It implies a dedicated slot within the phone’s design, allowing users to conveniently carry and store their S Pen.
This potential inclusion would be a significant upgrade for the foldable series. The S Pen has its own fanbase that appreciates the precision and versatility it offers to write and draw. It’s quite convenient to seamlessly jot down notes, sketch ideas, or navigate the larger unfolded screen with the familiar feel of Samsung’s stylus, all without having to remember to carry it separately.
Tech hurdles to overcome
One of the key hurdles for S Pen integration in foldable phones has been the delicate nature of the foldable display. Earlier reports suggested concerns about the stylus potentially damaging the screen. However, advancements in display technology, including tougher protective layers and potentially a different type of digitizer, might have paved the way for this integration. Another challenge is finding enough internal space without compromising on other specs. Currently, the task is even more difficult due to the extreme thinness of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 . However, perhaps high-density battery technology will have something to say in this regard in the future.

Details about how Samsung could bring S Pen support back to the Galaxy Z Fold devices are still scarce. However, the very fact that Samsung is exploring the possibility suggests it’s listening to user feedback. Actively working on making the S Pen a more integral part of the Galaxy Z Fold experience would be great news.
Should the project succeed, it has the potential to revolutionize productivity and creative tasks while on the move. Let’s hope to hear positive news about it in the coming weeks.
