The parent company of Facebook, Meta, has announced that it will discontinue the metaverse for work, too. The Horizon Workrooms is a virtual space for workers to collaborate. Meta says that starting from February 16th, 2026, users will no longer be able to access Workrooms. It says that it’ll delete any data associated with Workrooms,

Meta will discontinue the metaverse for work from February 16th

The company introduced Horizon Workrooms two months before it was rebranded to Meta in 2021. This brings people together to work, collaborate, and connect. Along with shutting down Horizon Workrooms, Meta will also stop selling its headsets and software as a service for businesses, including “ Meta Horizon managed service and commercial SKUs of Meta Quest .” This will be effective from February 20th, 2026.

This comes after Meta recently laid off around 10% of its entire Reality Labs division . That’s roughly 1,000 job losses. Besides these layoffs, Meta completely shuttered three VR game studios, after closing another studio in 2024. It has also come out that the company is abandoning future development on Supernatural, a popular VR fitness app. The company has also reportedly gutted the studio behind Batman: Arkham Shadow.

The road ahead

While Meta will continue to develop the metaverse, the focus will be on mobile phones, instead of the fully immersive VR headsets that the company initially imagined. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth hinted at this change in strategy. In a memo, he reportedly said that the company’s Horizon team would “ double down on bringing the best Horizon experiences and AI creator tools to mobile .”

As said, Horizon Workrooms will shut down on February 16th, and any data on Workrooms will be gone. Meta is suggesting users try Arthur, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom Workplace instead. The tech giant also notes that the Meta Quest Remote Desktop app will remain available for those who want to use multiple virtual monitors in their headsets.

Customers can still access Meta Horizon managed services for Meta Quest 3 and 3S until January 4th, 2030. Licenses will be free after February 16th, 2026.
