With the latest Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 update, Google continues to refine the Android home screen experience by adding a new widget resizing option . It’s a very subtle yet meaningful change that improves the overall user experience. The newly added optional on-screen control gives the user an accessible way to resize the widget without removing the familiar drag-based system.

The widget resizing option is finally available on Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2

Until now, resizing a widget on Android required a long press followed by dragging the widget’s borders in the desired direction. However, in the latest Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 update, Google has added visible plus and minus buttons that appear when a widget enters edit mode. Users can click on the plus icon to increase and the minus icon to decrease the size of the widget.

The newly added option sits alongside the existing gesture-based method. It doesn’t replace the older yet familiar method. It aims to give users an additional way to fine-tune the dimensions of the home screen widgets. The source Android Authority reports that the buttons work across multiple widget types. The controls are dynamic and disappear

The feature is expected to reach the stable version soon

Further, the widget resizing buttons support Android’s wallpaper-based color theming option. It automatically adapts to the system theme by borrowing the colors from the wallpaper or the preset system color theme. The buttons work both vertically and horizontally, depending on how the widget can be adjusted. As said earlier, accessibility is the main focus of the control. Users who struggle with the precise finger movements or extended gestures should prefer this option.

Since the feature is already in the Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 version, we can expect its release on the stable version before the next quarter. Further, it remains unclear whether these buttons will be enabled by default when the feature reaches a stable release. They may appear as an option setting inside the Accessibility menu to avoid overlap. Regardless, Google has not shared any official information on the stable release yet. The presence of the feature in a beta does not guarantee it will ship widely.
