In a leadership shift, Apple’s AI chief, John Giannandrea, steps down from his role . This shift follows as the company reshapes its artificial intelligence strategy after a series of delays and internal concerns. The changes are announced at a very crucial moment as Apple is pushing to modernize Siri and position it as a more powerful contender in the AI market.
Apple AI Chief steps down from his role due to internal changes
Amar Subramanya, a veteran of Google and Microsoft, will take over as Apple’s new vice president of AI. The company’s transition away from Giannandrea could mark a turning point for the company’s AI journey. Giannandrea joined Apple in 2018 after overseeing AI and Search at Google. He was given the responsibility of elevating Siri’s current market position. But the development setback seems to be quite visible.
In March, Apple acknowledged that a more personalized version of Siri would not be ready as planned. And therefore, the launch was pushed to the next spring. Reports later indicated that Tim Cook had lost confidence in the pace of AI progress under Giannandrea. This also pushed the company for a strategic leadership change. Giannandrea will remain an advisor until the scheduled retirement in 2026.
Amar Subramanya takes the role of the next AI chief
Apple doesn’t want to lose the pace, especially in the rapidly evolving AI market. And the current appointment of Amar Subramanya reflects the same. After 16 years at Google and a recent role at Microsoft’s AI division, Subramanya brings extensive experience in deploying machine learning research into real products. He will be primarily responsible for overseeing the development of AI models , machine learning research, and safety systems at Apple.
Apple seems quite confident in its role as it emphasises that its background is well-suited for upcoming Apple Intelligence features. Subramanya’s work will be overseen by software chief Craig Federighi, who has taken on a larger role in directing Apple’s AI strategy and coordinating product integration across teams.
