Apple’s internal team is seeing a bit of turmoil lately. Back in October, the company lost its AI Search project head, Ke Yang, to Meta. Now, another joins the list. Alan Dye, Apple’s design lead, is heading to Meta, as per a Bloomberg report . Dye played a key role in the look and feel of Apple’s products since Jony Ive left the company in 2019.
Apple’s design lead, Alan Dye, is moving to Meta
Alan Dye is reportedly heading to Meta . He will work under Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth to lead a new studio that’ll oversee the design of hardware, software, and AI products. Alan will be joined by former Apple designer Billy Sorrentino, Meta’s interface design lead Joshua To, an industrial design team led by Pete Bristol, and the metaverse dean and art teams led by Jason Rubin.
“ The new studio will bring together design, fashion, and technology to define the next generation of our products and experiences. Our idea is to treat intelligence as a new design material and imagine what becomes possible when it is abundant, capable, and human-centered ,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Threads .
Alan Dye isn’t the first
Alan Dye reportedly worked on several of Apple’s major new platforms and designs, including the interface of VisionOS and its new Liquid Glass design. Apple is reportedly replacing Dye with Stephen Lemay, a senior designer worked on all of the company’s interfaces since 1999.
Alan Dye isn’t the first designer Apple has lost to rivals. Evans Hankey, the tech giant’s former head of industrial design, left Apple in 2022 to join Jony Ive. He is now one of several former Apple employees building OpenAI’s upcoming hardware device .
Dye’s joining Meta is an interesting development. This is considering Apple is apparently working on products that’ll heat the competition with the social media giant. The Cupertino giant is reportedly developing its own pair of smart glasses.
