Apple’s Face ID system is impressive. Even until today, it’s hard to find a similar system on Android devices. But the company isn’t about to rest on its laurels. According to a recent report, it seems that both Apple and Huawei are working on new 3D face scanning technologies .

Apple, Huawei working on new 3D face scanning

According to the rumor, Apple and Huawei are both separately working on new 3D face scanning tech. The post on X by @RODENT950 claims that both companies are developing a new 3D Face ID system that is smaller than the current version . This means that instead of a gaping Dynamic Island, it could be small enough to fit partially under the display.

While we can’t be sure of when Apple’s version will debut, the post claims that we might be able to look forward to it in the Huawei P40 Pro+. Unfortunately, due to ongoing sanctions against Huawei, most of us in the US won’t be able to try it out for ourselves. However, if the report is true, Huawei customers in other parts of the world can look forward to a similar Face ID system as Apple’s.

Coming to the iPhone 18?

While the post does not mention when this new and improved Face ID will arrive for the iPhone, there’s a good chance it could make its appearance in the iPhone 18. For years, Apple has utilized a notched design and Dynamic Island to house Face ID and the front-facing camera.

But if you believe the rumors, Apple is working on a way to get rid of it entirely. From what we heard, the iPhone 18 could be the first iPhone to use an in-display Face ID . Following that, Apple is expected to eventually hide the entire front camera under the screen. This will result in a front display with zero cutouts.

Now, we’ve seen phones that utilize in-display cameras. However, the results leave a lot to be desired. This also explains why it hasn’t quite caught on yet. Will Apple be able to achieve what others have failed? That remains to be seen, but a small Dynamic Island seems like a good place to start.
