Apple is allegedly working on under-display 3D facial recognition. Those rumors have been circling for quite some time now. Well, Apple may not be first to offer under-display 3D face recognition , though, despite those rumors.

Xiaomi may trump Apple and be first to offer under-display 3D face recognition

According to a new report, Xiaomi is also in the running. The company is developing the Xiaomi MIX 5 , allegedly, which will feature such advanced facial recognition that will be placed under the display.

This phone is also expected to debut before the Apple iPhone 18 series of devices. So it’s expected to arrive before September 2026. We’re just not sure when exactly will it launch, though.

We haven’t seen a new Xiaomi MIX series phone since August 2021. That’s when the Xiaomi MIX 4 arrived. Xiaomi was rumored to launch new MIX devices several times, but that did not happen just yet.

The Xiaomi MIX 5 is a mystery at the moment

This rumor comes from Digital Chat Station, who did mention the feature, but did not mention the phone itself. However, an additional report surfaced claiming that it is the Xiaomi MIX 5. On top of that, another tipster, Smart Pikachu, recently said that an upcoming Xiaomi phone will feature such tech.

If this ends up being true, Xiaomi will be first on the market to enable under-display 3D face scanning. That tech has been used mostly by Apple and HONOR . Both companies have been utilizing it for years.

Both of them have included a pill-shaped cutout on the display to enable it. HONOR’s cutout was considerably smaller, though. It would be kind of interesting to see a third company reach under-display 3D facial tech before either of these two companies, though, as everyone was expecting either Apple to get there first.

No additional information regarding the Xiaomi MIX 5 surfaced. That phone is still a mystery, save for this feature.
