Unlike Android handset makers, Apple has never really chased megapixels in its iPhone cameras. Instead, the company relies heavily on lens quality and its image processing algorithms to get its photos. But this doesn’t mean that iPhone users won’t appreciate a bump in megapixels. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait because according to reports, Apple could use 200MP sensors from Samsung for its 2028 iPhones cameras.

200MP iPhone cameras coming in 2028

According to a report to investors from Morgan Stanley and seen by AppleInsider, the analysts believe that iPhones with 200MP cameras will arrive in 2028, with the sensors coming courtesy of Samsung .

As it stands, Apple uses 48MP cameras for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max ’s triple camera setup. A jump to 200MP would be a pretty big upgrade. However, we’re not sure if Apple will give all the cameras the 200MP treatment, or if it will reserve the sensor for the main camera or telephoto.

Either way, it’s too soon to tell, especially since the 2026 iPhones have yet to be announced. Also, sourcing from Samsung is an interesting shift in direction for the company. Right now, Apple relies on Sony for its camera sensors. However, the report suggests that maybe Sony is starting to fall behind Samsung in terms of technology, thus forcing Apple to seek alternatives.

Still a long way to go

We should note that just because Apple might make the jump to 200MP sensors in 2028 doesn’t mean it is neglecting its upcoming iPhones. Apple usually introduces camera upgrades with every iPhone refresh. Whether it comes in slightly upgraded sensors, new lens coatings, or better software.

For 2026, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 18. However, based on the latest rumors, Apple could skip the base models for 2026 in favor of the Pro and Pro Max and its first foldable. The base model is expected to be reserved for 2027. Then in 2027, which marks the iPhone’s 20th anniversary, Apple is rumored to be doing something huge .

The company is rumored to revamp the iPhone’s design. It is going with a mostly glass and metal look and potentially a bezel and notch-free display. Regardless, 2026 and 2027 will still be pretty exciting in terms of iPhone news. So, you might not necessarily have to wait until 2028 if you want to upgrade.
