Back in 2020, Apple launched the MagSafe ecosystem for its iPhones. It should not be confused with the other Apple MagSafe, which is used to charge the company’s MacBook laptops. Now, it looks like Apple has released its latest iteration of its MagSafe charger, but this time it comes with 25W Qi2 support. This accessory was launched alongside other iPhone accessories at the iPhone 17 event .

New 25W Qi2 MagSafe charger

Apple likes to keep its branding clean and simple. This is why some of you looking at the product page might be confused. Visually, the new MagSafe charger looks the same as its predecessor, but the main difference is that it now supports 25W charging and Qi2 .

But wait, didn’t Apple previously update the charger with 25W charging support? Yes they did. However, the previous charger only supported 25W charging speeds for the iPhone 16 series (with the exception of the iPhone 16e) and the iPhone 17 .

Now, this new charger supports Qi2 25W, also known as Qi 2.2. This means that in addition to iPhones, it can charge Android devices as long as they are compatible. Users also get up to 25W speeds. So, if you’re an Android user with a Qi2 compatible phone and you like the aesthetics of Apple’s MagSafe, you can use it too. The new charger offers cable lengths of 1 meter or 2 meters and is priced at $39 and $49 respectively.

Cross-platform support

Back when Apple stubbornly stuck to its guns to keep using Lightning, it meant that you couldn’t borrow a cable from an Android user to charge your phone. Apple eventually made the switch to USB-C.

Now with the wider adoption of Qi2 in Android phones, the MagSafe charger has become another Apple accessory that supports non-iPhone devices. This is thanks in part of Apple lending its MagSafe technology during the development of Qi2.

When Qi2 first launched, its charging speeds were capped at 15W. However, Qi 2.2 increased those speeds to 25W. It also refined the magnets in the charging system to make it more precise. This ensures more stable, safer, and efficient charging.
