In 2026, Apple will launch its most expensive iPhone to date, the iPhone Fold (or whatever Apple plans to call it). However, despite the rumored hefty price tag of $2,000, it will lack a feature that the cheaper iPhones have, and that is Face ID. Instead, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will use Touch ID in the iPhone Fold and it is unlikely to be an in-display variant.
iPhone Fold to use Touch ID, but not in-display
According to Kuo, he reiterates his earlier report that the iPhone Fold will use Touch ID instead of Face ID, and that even with Touch ID, it is unlikely to be an in-display fingerprint sensor. Instead, Apple could place Touch ID on the side of the phone. This would be similar to some of Apple’s iPads, which feature Touch ID integrated into the power button.
This is honestly a little disappointing. Apple has long touted the security and efficiency of Face ID. The possibility that Apple could charge $2,000 (or more) for an iPhone that lacks this feature is a bit of a letdown. However, it is possible that this could be due to space constraints. If the rumors are accurate, the iPhone Fold will only be 4.5mm thin when unfolded. This isn’t enough space for the TrueDepth scanning module. It is why Apple could opt to use Touch ID instead.
Then, there is also the issue of cost. Apple will have to decide if it wants to use Face ID on both the outer and inner displays. If they opt to go for both, its foldable could end up being more expensive. If they opt for a mix and match, then the lack of consistency is equally frustrating.
Touch ID isn’t a bad thing
While we are disappointed that the iPhone Fold might not feature Face ID, Touch ID isn’t a bad compromise. Apple’s fingerprint sensor is a tried-and-proven system. At least customers know what they’ll be getting themselves into. Plus, some users might actually prefer Touch ID.
The problem with Face ID is you need to hold your phone to your face for it to work. Sometimes this might not be possible. Let’s not forget that it doesn’t always work. At least Touch ID is more consistent. This doesn’t mean Apple won’t include Face ID in future iterations. However, it is something to think about if you’re planning to buy it.
