Apple and Samsung have a unique relationship. Both companies have sued the living daylights out of each other. Samsung has also posted quite a number of ads poking fun at Apple . However, at the end of the day, money talks, because despite all their rivalry, Apple and Samsung are still in business with each other. In fact, recent reports claim that Apple could source 11 million OLED panels from Samsung for its upcoming foldable iPhone.
Apple could use Samsung OLED panels for foldable iPhone
According to a recent post on X by Jukan , Apple is expected to source 11 million OLED panels from Samsung for use in its foldable iPhone. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that Apple could use Samsung panels. In a way it makes sense given Samsung’s experience in the foldable display scene.
However, this is the first time we’re seeing actual numbers. While it might not be 100% accurate, it could give us a rough idea of how many foldable iPhones Apple plans to make. 11 million units is quite a significant number, but as Jukan states, it suggests that Apple is quite optimistic about the sales of the device.
This is quite a stark contrast to the first-ever Samsung foldable, which reportedly sold between 400,000-500,000 units. However, to be fair, the foldables scene has matured a lot since then. Many other competitors have entered the space and seeing someone with a foldable phone has become commonplace.
This could also be the reason why Apple took its sweet time. Instead of trying to launch a phone with an experimental form factor, the company waited. It waited to see what everyone else was doing the mistakes they were making before sweeping in with the “perfect” foldable.
What can we expect from Apple’s foldable?
Based on the rumors, Apple’s foldable will be a relatively thin device . It is said that it will resemble two iPhone Airs placed next to each other. According to the rumors, it measures 4.5mm-4.8mm thin when unfolded, and 9-9.5mm thin when closed. It is also rumored to pack the largest battery we’ve ever seen in an iPhone .
Apple has also reportedly solved the crease problem. The company has created a hinge that will result in the foldable iPhone being crease-free. We’re not sure if it will be truly crease-free or if the crease will simply be too small to notice, but we’ll have to wait and see. Last but not least, it won’t come cheap. The latest rumors claim the foldable iPhone could cost as much as $2,400. So, if you’re an Apple user that was hoping the company would step into the foldables space, prepare your wallet.
