Apple devices, while popular for their seamless closed ecosystem, are often criticized for limited third-party device support. But this might finally change with the upcoming version of iOS 26 . Apple is reportedly working on a feature that will allow iPhone users to forward their device’s notifications to any third-party smartwatch.

Apple is working to improve third-party smartwatch support on iOS

Apple’s own smartwatches are considered the best for their seamless integration with other Apple products. While we can technically connect any third-party smartwatches to iPhones, they do not perform as well as when connected to an Android phone. This is because of the unwanted restrictions imposed by the tech giant.

As per a report shared by MacWorld, Apple is considering improving third-party smartwatch integration on iOS . The company is working on a feature called “Notification Forwarding” for non-Apple wearables and accessories. While the exact function of it remains unknown, it would likely enable the device to relay notifications to other connected gadgets.

Several new features coming

Notification forwarding isn’t really a new thing for Apple. It already had the support of forwarding notifications to connected accessories. However, it was so restrictive (and annoying) that users would rather turn it off than use it. The tech giant is finally reconsidering its approach, and the upcoming version of iOS might finally bring improved third-party smartwatch support.

Another feature, called the “AccessoryExtension”, is also in the works. This feature would likely improve the pairing process of third-party accessories with iPhones or other Apple devices. It might work similarly to Google Fast Pair. But do note that both of these features are under development. They could arrive in the coming iOS 26 updates, or the company is simply laying out the groundwork, with the actual rollout pushed to the next major iOS update.
