It’s no secret that artificial intelligence has become a major part of our lives. However, new data shows just how big the revolution really is—especially on our smartphones. A recent analysis reveals that the ChatGPT mobile app has officially generated an incredible $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023.

This dizzying figure is concrete proof that AI has moved from a niche technology to an everyday essential. To put that $2 billion figure in perspective, it’s approximately 30 times the combined lifetime spending of its closest mobile rivals, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok. When you look at the US market specifically, the app has earned an even more impressive $10 per download. This also shows a strong interest in premium AI features.

ChatGPT app’s revenue exceeds Grok’s—the second in the ranking—by 53x

As reflected by the Appfigures study, the growth is just as striking. So far this year, the app has made $1.35 billion, representing a staggering 673% year-over-year increase from the same period in 2024. This means the app is now generating close to $193 million per month on average. What’s even more telling is the huge gap between ChatGPT and its competitors. According to the data, ChatGPT’s app revenue is a staggering 53 times higher than its next closest rival, Grok, which is developed by Elon Musk’s xAI. This dominance is likely a factor in Musk’s public complaints about the App Store’s alleged favoritism of ChatGPT in its rankings.

The app’s success isn’t just about revenue ; it’s about adoption. The ChatGPT app has been downloaded an estimated 690 million times globally. Plus, its average monthly downloads have risen by 180% in the last year alone. Interestingly, while the US leads in revenue with a 38% of total spending, India leads in lifetime downloads. Perhaps this led the company to launch its new ChatGPT Go ultra-affordable subscription first in India. Germany is the second-largest market for spending, although it’s a distant second at 5.3% of the total.

AI platforms become essential for millions worldwide

Let’s remember that this data only covers mobile app store purchases. Web subscriptions, API licensing, or other revenue streams that likely multiply the total significantly were not considered. So, currently, AI isn’t just for researchers and developers anymore. The figures signal that AI assistance is now as common as a weather apps or music streaming services for millions.
