OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been one of the more mainstream AI models out there. It is available on both desktop and mobile. However, according to the latest data from Apptopia , it appears that the app growth of ChatGPT has been slowing down.
ChatGPT app growth is slowing down
Based on the data, ChatGPT app growth has been steadily rising since last year, but now its growth seems to be slowing . Around the end of August and the start of September, we’re starting to see a dip in daily active users. While ChatGPT is by no means declining, its growth appears to have plateaued.
When we take a deeper look at the report, the average time spent in the app by daily active users in the US have dropped by 22.5% since July. The average sessions are also down by 20.7%. This suggests that users are not only spending less time, but are opening the app less frequently than before.
So, what gives?
OpenAI did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for a comment on the report. However, there are several possibilities. For one, other companies like Anthropic and Google have been hard at work pushing out newer and more capable models. This means that users might be abandoning ChatGPT for other models like Claude and Gemini.
Alternatively, OpenAI itself might be to blame. In August, the company launched its GPT-5 model . This was billed as the company’s most capable model to date. However, many ChatGPT users were less than impressed . This led to OpenAI bringing back older models to placate users. But the damage might have already been done.
A third possibility, as noted by Apptopia, is that the experimentation phase with ChatGPT is “over.” This means that users who downloaded the app just to see what all the fuss is about might have gotten over the novelty of AI. This just leaves users who actually use it as part of their daily routine.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but there is stiff competition in the AI scene and OpenAI cannot just rely on loyal users. In the meantime, the company has announced some changes. One of which is allowing ChatGPT to create “adult” content , which we wouldn’t be surprised if it resulted in an influx of new users.
