Earlier this year, it was reported that Sony’s original PS5 console model had a liquid metal issue that could cause the console to perform unfavorably, perhaps even overheat and shut down. While this didn’t happen to every single person who owns one of the original PS5 units, it was determined to be a real problem . Any consoles that would stand up vertically could end up having some of the liquid metal drip down out of the area where it covers the APU.

This would, in turn, leave parts of the APU uncovered or with very little amounts of liquid metal, causing potential overheating problems. This issue was supposed to be limited to the older units. Newer models, including the PS5 Pro , had some minor changes made to counteract this problem. It’s now being claimed by a console repair technician and modder that this can happen to all the units.

The liquid metal issue can potentially impact all PS5 models

It’s worth noting that while anything is possible, this is one single claim that shouldn’t be taken as verifiable that all systems will eventually need maintenance. With that being said, this is what the claim is stating. All PlayStation 5 systems will eventually need to be serviced for this problem.

According to @modyfikatorcasper on X, a PS5 Slim model that was no more than 1.5 years old came in for service. After taking the console apart, they found that it had the dreaded liquid metal dry spots . Not great, but also not something that can’t be repaired. It’s also not a damning revelation that this will happen to every single PS5 console. However, that doesn’t mean consumers shouldn’t be aware of the possibility and be prepared to handle the issue if it comes up. If anything, this should serve as a minor warning to keep an eye on things. It’s also worth noting that @modyfikatorcasper mentions they have had multiple newer models of the PS5 come in that have had the same problem. So, it’s reportedly not a one-off, though also not a massively widespread issue like the first-gen model.

They go on to say that it also doesn’t matter if the console is placed vertically or horizontally. Those things can probably expedite the issue surfacing, but a notable portion of the problem comes up simply because of liquid metal degradation over time, plus temperature increases, as well as the quality of the liquid metal application itself. In other words, place your PS5 however you like. It may need repairs eventually, but it may not. The best course of action is just to be prepared for that possibility.
