How often do you upgrade your smartwatch? For most of us, these trusty wrist companions stick around for a few years. That said, it is only natural that, after a certain time, the battery begins to show its age. Unlike our smartphones, which often come with sophisticated battery care features, smartwatches have generally lagged behind in offering tools to extend their vital power source. But good news: Samsung is stepping up to the plate with a clever new “Battery Protection” helper to its Galaxy Watch 8 series.

The latest generation of Galaxy Watch wearables introduces a thoughtful feature simply called “Battery Protection.” It’s a small change, but one that could make a significant difference in how long your smartwatch’s battery remains robust and healthy.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 New “Battery Protection” Tool

Here’s how it works: Once enabled in the watch’s settings, this feature will stop your Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 from charging when its battery level reaches 90%. It then patiently waits. If the battery naturally drops to 85%, it will resume charging, topping it back up to 90%. Essentially, it keeps your watch’s battery dancing between that 85% and 90% sweet spot when it’s on the charger.

Why is this important? It all comes down to the science of lithium-ion batteries. If you are not aware, this technology is the basis of the battery of most of our modern gadgets. Constantly keeping these cells at a full 100% charge puts them under increased stress. This stress, over time, can accelerate degradation and shorten the battery’s overall lifespan. Many smartphones offer similar protections, often capping the charge at 80% to maximize longevity.

Samsung’s decision to opt for a 90% cap on the Galaxy Watch 8 likely strikes a balance . As we already know, smartwatch batteries are already quite small. So, capping them too low (like 80%) might impact the watch’s ability to last a full day for some users. In the end, the ideal scenario is that the smartwatch is still capable of having juice for the entire day. The 90% limit aims to provide a meaningful level of protection without compromising the daily user experience.

One UI 8 could bring it to more Galaxy Watch devices

The “Battery Protection” tool is currently exclusive to the Galaxy Watch 8 series. We hope to see this practical feature make its way to older Galaxy Watch models. We may hear more about it in the upcoming One UI 8 Watch update.
