Mobile gaming often feels like a commitment. Players are torn between modern power and the tactile controls that are much less precise than those of a controller . GameSir is looking to bridge that gap with its latest Kickstarter project: the Pocket Taco. This vertical mobile controller aims to recreate the classic handheld experience without the bulk of a dedicated retro console.

GameSir’s Pocket Taco is the most portable vertical mobile controller of 2026

The first thing you notice about the Pocket Taco is its form factor. Most mobile controllers available out there resort to a familiar horizontal “sandwich” design. Meanwhile, this one uses a vertical clamp. When you snap your phone in, it immediately mimics the look of a classic Game Boy or a vintage arcade machine.

The accessory is clearly built for people who are always on the move. It weighs just over 600 grams and measures about 78mm when folded. So, it is small enough to fit into a jacket pocket or a small bag. To keep things simple, GameSir included a smart power feature: the device turns on automatically when you unfold the clamp and powers down the moment you close it. This prevents that frustrating situation where you reach for your controller only to find the battery drained.

Tactile feel and modern perks

While the design is old-school, the hardware under the hood is modern. It uses Bluetooth to connect to Android devices and other compatible platforms. For the buttons, GameSir chose a mix of textures. You get cushioned membrane inputs for the D-pad and ABXY buttons—providing that soft, “mushy” retro feel. You’ll also find tactile clicky switches for the triggers and bumpers to ensure responsiveness.

One particularly thoughtful detail is the “hollow-bottom” design. Most controllers block your phone’s charging port, forcing you to stop playing when the battery gets low. The Pocket Taco leaves that area open, so you can keep your phone plugged in during long sessions. Additionally, the interior of the clamp is lined with silicone pads, so you don’t have to worry about the plastic scratching your phone’s finish.

Availability and pricing

The Pocket Taco is available in a classic Gray for most people. However, those who back the Kickstarter campaign can also get their hands on an exclusive “Atom Purple” version. Early bird pricing starts around $34.99, a pretty affordable entry point for anyone wanting to spice up their mobile gaming setup. The campaign is set to run until March 14, 2026, with the first units expected to ship to gamers in April.
