Google is slowly expanding the support of Gemini across its software ecosystem. It has already integrated the AI assistant into several of its first-party apps, services, and Smart Home devices. Until now, Gemini for Home has been limited to Google’s own smart speakers and displays. However, a new report suggests that Google is expanding Gemini for Home to third-party speakers as it appears on a Lenovo Smart Display.
Lenovo Smart Display gets Gemini for Home support via an update
A Reddit user has expressed his surprise on a post after spotting a message on its Lenovo Smart Display. It reads: “Update in progress. Check back soon to get started with Gemini for Home.” This confirms that Gemini is getting rolled out on hardware that was previously limited to Google Assistant only. The report, shared via Android Authority , marks the first public sign that Google is testing Gemini on non-Google smart home devices.
However, Google has not yet confirmed any expansion of Gemini for Home to Lenovo’s smart home lineup. The user who earlier provided the information has not shared any after-update experience as well. But regardless, the expansion might be happening as one of the executives of the company had recently said that “We are working with third-party speaker companies to bring Gemini for Home to more devices.”
Third-party devices might finally get the latest AI-powered assistant
If the reports are accurate, Lenovo Smart Display users could soon receive one of Google’s biggest smart home upgrades at no additional cost. The update will replace the traditional Google Assistant with a smarter and faster Gemini for Home. The AI assistant is much more capable and can interact more naturally with the users.
Until now, Gemini for Home has been limited to a small list of Google devices, including the Nest Hub, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Home Max, and Nest Wifi point. Other third-party speakers and displays have not even received any meaningful updates in years, let alone getting an AI assistant. But this finally seems to be changing. If Gemini reaches these devices, the users could breathe new life into devices that many users feared Google would abandon.
