The shutdown of Google Assistant is coming around the final bend, as Google plans to kill off the AI-powered tool that has been its main character for more than a decade. What once was Google’s pride and joy when it came to making users’ lives easier is being replaced by a younger, stronger version that does more stuff and knows more things.

This, of course, refers to Google Gemini . Gemini is the new face of Google’s AI-related features. It does basically everything that Assistant can do, plus more. It serves the same function, so it naturally makes sense that Google would eventually phase Assistant out. Up until now, however, it wasn’t really clear when Google planned to do that. While Google Assistant is still available on most devices, Gemini has already taken over as the default on most if not all, like with Android Auto .

The Google Assistant shutdown takes place next March

If you like using Google Assistant and still use it often, you can continue to enjoy using it as your main voice assistant across Google products until March of next year. At the moment, Google hasn’t issued a public statement regarding this change. However, the official forum for Google Assistant and Talk To Gemini briefly mentions that Google Assistant will continue to work until March 2026 .

There’s no mention of a specific date , so it could just as easily be March 1 as the end of the month. Regardless of when it is, you may as well just rip the band-aid off now and switch to using Gemini. This way, you aren’t making the switch last minute. It’s also worth mentioning that there’s no real difference when it comes to how you interact with either one. Using it will feel the same; you just get more out of Gemini. In other words, there’s no real downside. Of course, you may still prefer Google Assistant over Google Gemini, and that’s perfectly fine. Just know that you only have a few more months before you will have to make the switch.
