Google has finally taken the wraps off the Pixel 10 series, Pixel Watch 4, and the Pixel Buds 2a. And not to be forgotten, the new color of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 is now available in Moonstone.
Starting off with the base model Pixel 10 , it now has a pretty big upgrade for the cameras. Google has added a telephoto to the Pixel 10, which is actually a 5x telephoto, making it the only smartphone in this price range with a 5x telephoto camera. However, unfortunately, all three cameras have been downgraded. They’re all smaller this year, with a 48-megapixel primary sensor and a 13-megapixel ultrawide. But Google does have its own custom-built ISP in the Tensor G5, which should really help with the camera.
The base model does stick with the 6.3-inch display but it does get a brightness upgrade. It now 2,000nits on HDR content and up to 3,000nits of peak brightness. Not that brightness was an issue before, but it definitely isn’t now.
Google is sticking with 128GB as the base storage here, though they are adding 512GB of storage as a third option.
Google Pixel 10 Pro gains 100x Pro Res Zoom
Moving onto the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL models, these do get a few features that the base model does not get. This includes 100x Pro Res Zoom. So now you can zoom at up to 100x inside the camera, before you take the photo.
The cameras are remaining the same on the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL this year. That includes a 50-megapixel primary sensor, 48-megapixel ultrawide and a 48-megapixel telephoto lens. It also brings in Camera Coach , which is launching in Preview on the Pixel 10 series this year. This is a feature that is powered by Gemini, to essentially “coach” you into taking better photos.
Other specs for the Pro models include the Tensor G5, 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The Pixel 10 Pro is sticking with 128GB as the starting storage size, while the Pro XL is starting at 256GB.
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold gets thicker and a larger battery
When every other foldable is getting thinner, Google has decided to make theirs thicker for some reason. So the Pixel 10 Pro Fold now measures in at 5.2mm when unfolded, just a tiny bit thicker than last year which was 5.1mm. But it’s for good reason. Google has added a pretty substantial size battery to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold this year, it is now 5,015mAh making it the largest capacity battery in a foldable in the US, and the largest battery that is not silicon carbon.
Google has also added PixelSnap to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and the entire Pixel 10 lineup. So magnets are finally built into an Android smartphone. And the magnets are very strong, as we’ve found out during our hands-on time ahead of today’s announcement.
Hardware-wise, the biggest change is going to be on the front here. Google has drastically decreased the size of the hinge, and the bezels, making it a 6.4-inch display while actually making the device a tiny bit smaller, we’re talking tenths of a millimeter difference here. It does still have an 8-inch inner display, which is just a tad smaller than the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Google Pixel Watch 4 is “all-new”
Apparently, Google thinks that the Pixel Watch 4 is “all-new” but the only real difference is on the left side and the back of the watch. So, Google has once again redesigned the sensor array on the back, and it’s now more accurate than ever before. And with that, Google did decide to move the charging contacts to the left side of the watch. Google says that this allowed for faster charging and repairability.
That’s right, you can now remove the back off of the Pixel Watch 4 and replace the battery or the display if needed. There’s a tiny screw underneath the band connector that removes the backside of the watch.
Pixel Watch 4 will launch with Material 3 Expressive of course, and it also gets larger batteries. Google is saying up to 30 hours of usage on the 41mm and 40 hours on the 45mm. Charging being about 25% faster than the Pixel Watch 3. There’s also AI-powered activity recognition and a personal health coach, which will be part of the new Fitbit app that is launching in October. That’s right, yet another redesign for the Fitbit app.
Google Pixel Buds 2a are the smallest and lightest a-series buds yet
Finally, let’s talk the Pixel Buds 2a. These are going to be the smallest and lightest a-series buds yet, though this is only the second generation, so that’s not saying much.
The Pixel Buds 2a do get a pretty good battery upgrade; we’re looking at about 7 hours with ANC on, and around 20 hours with the carrying case. Pixel Buds 2a do get Gemini hands-free, which is part of a Pixel Buds update slated for September.
