Android developers can now build once and deploy the app across the entire Android XR device family. Google has also confirmed that Samsung is working on smart glasses . However, the firm has not discussed the launch timeline or any hardware specifications .
Developers now have early access to begin development of apps and services for the upcoming AI glasses. They can use Jetpack Compose Glimmer to enable lightweight overlays, while Jetpack Projected will allow existing Android apps to extend directly onto glasses. Due to the Gemini integration, the glasses will offer real-time translation, visual search, and contextual assistance.
Android XR expands compatibility to a wider range of third-party devices
Android XR’s platform expansion now includes wired XR glasses like Project Aura from XREAL . The particular device is scheduled to launch next year. The gadget expands the range of supported display form factors and also encourages developers to create experiences that adjust naturally across display types.
The developer preview of the Android XR SDK introduces new headset API improvements and unlocks full development for AI glasses. It brings ARCore upgrades for Jetpack XR, including geospatial features that support accurate wayfinding and location-based content. The new Field of View API will help apps to adapt the layout of headsets and wired glasses. Developers can also use Unreal Engine’s native Android and OpenXR capabilities to build projects.
