The core idea behind Personal Intelligence is to let Gemini “connect the dots” across your digital history. Up until now, AI assistants were great at fetching a single email or finding a specific photo if you asked directly. Meanwhile, personal intelligence goes a step further. The upgrade uses reasoning to combine information about you from multiple sources. The list includes things like Gmail, Google Photos , Search history, and even YouTube .
This feature enables a new level of functionality and depth to Gemini responses. For instance, if you are standing at a car shop and can’t remember your tire size or license plate, Gemini can now scour your inbox for a past receipt or find a specific photo of your vehicle to give you the answer in seconds.
Powered by Gemini 3 models
This functionality is powered by the latest Gemini 3 model family with advanced reasoning capabilities. It uses a method that Google calls “context packing.” The latter helps to surface the most relevant details from your vast amount of data only when a personal touch is actually helpful. For example, if you are planning a vacation, Gemini doesn’t just suggest popular tourist spots. Instead, the AI will look at your past trips and interests stored in your emails and photos to recommend experiences you might actually enjoy.
Privacy remains a central focus of this rollout. Personal Intelligence is off by default, meaning you have to manually choose to enable it. You can also select exactly which apps Gemini can access. Google emphasizes that the AI does not “learn” or train directly on your private Gmail or Photos data. Instead, it simply references that information to answer your specific queries. The system is designed to understand how to locate a piece of information, such as a license plate number, without permanently absorbing it into the model’s general training set.
Data privacy measures
There are also clear boundaries regarding sensitive topics. Gemini is designed to avoid making proactive assumptions about health data. It will discuss these topics if you explicitly ask it to, though. Users also have the option to use temporary chats or regenerate responses without personalization. This is useful for when you want a clean slate for a specific conversation. The company notes that your information isn’t being sent to third parties to make this personalization work. After all, your data already exists within Google’s secure servers.
Lastly, Google plans to expand the feature to more countries and eventually to the free tier in the future.
