Google allows Android users to uninstall updates for system apps via the Play Store. But for some unknown reason, the company has now removed this ability. Android Authority reports that system app listings in the Google Play Store no longer have an uninstall button. Instead, there’s now only an open button.

Google reportedly removed the ability to uninstall updates for system apps via the Play Store

This change seems to be widespread and doesn’t seem to be targeting a specific Play Store app version. This change is apparently appearing on devices running Play Store app version 49.1.32-21 all the way to 49.2.25-31. System apps not listed in the app drawer, like Android Auto , Pixel Camera Services, also also apparently affected by this change. These listings usually have an uninstall button, but now, with the new change, there are no buttons here.

This change makes things inconvenient. Users will now have no choice but to visit app settings within the settings menu to uninstall updates for a system app, making things quite complex.

This makes uninstalling updates inconvenient

As said, Google hasn’t explicitly mentioned why it has removed the uninstall button for system apps, which wasn’t technically harming anyone. The timing of this is also quite odd. This change arrives after Google recently made it simpler to remotely uninstall apps. Play Store app listings show all your devices on which a particular app is installed, with an uninstall button next to each device. This offers a robust remote app management experience.
