Google is constantly improving its software products. Lately, we’ve seen the company heavily integrate artificial intelligence into most of them, both for businesses and regular users. Now, in an effort to improve the virtual meeting experience, Google is rolling out the “ Ask Gemini ” AI assistant in Google Meet . The tool aims to provide a range of advanced features and real-time assistance to improve meeting efficiency and collaboration.
Ask Gemini arrives to Google Meet: Never miss a detail again
The “Ask Gemini ” assistant for Meet is able to answer participants’ questions by referencing several sources. It can fetch data from live meeting captions and internal Google Workspace resources like Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail. Basically, you can access everything that the user has permission to view. The assistant can also obtain content from Google Search and public websites. This capability allows Ask Gemini to provide a summary of ongoing discussions or to offer a recap of what a specific participant said during the call.
For those who join a meeting late, the assistant can provide a concise summary of what was missed. You just have to activate “Take Notes for Me” to take advantage of this feature.
Ask Gemini’s functions extend to helping with meeting outcomes. It can automatically identify key takeaways, decisions, and action items, which helps create a more organized record of the meeting’s results for all participants.
A key focus for Google is privacy. A user’s interactions with and responses from Ask Gemini are kept private to that user and are not stored after the meeting ends. The same applies to other meeting data, such as captions. All participants will see a consent banner when Ask Gemini is enabled. Those joining via dial-in will hear an audio announcement. While the feature is turned on by default, meeting hosts can disable it at any time. Administrators can adjust the default settings for their entire organization.
Availability details
The initial rollout of Ask Gemini in Meet is starting now for select Google Workspace customers. Google specifies that it is a gradual rollout, with visibility for users on “Rapid Release” domains beginning on or after September 29th. For “Scheduled Release” domains, the rollout is targeted for completion by October 17th. Looking ahead, Google plans to make the feature available to a wider range of customers, including those with Business Starter, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus plans, in Q1 of 2026.
At this time, Ask Gemini in Meet is only available on desktop and currently supports meetings conducted in English. However, you can expect support for more languages in the near future. Google also cautions that Gemini in Workspace can make mistakes, so users should review its output.
