Google Meet gained a smart detection feature that recognizes when you’re in a conference room with others and automatically launches companion mode to join Meet calls. This went live officially in August last year, but was exclusive to laptops. Until now, at least, as Google is now expanding this for Android and iOS devices. However, it’s worth noting that this isn’t live as of today.

Google Meet’s conference room detection feature expands to Android and iOS

The automatic room check-in feature simplifies the process of joining meetings. It does so by using your device’s microphone to pick up ultrasonic signals within the room and automatically check you into the group call. This streamlines the process, eliminating unnecessary steps, says Google .

Google says that Meet intelligently knows when you are in a room using an ultrasonic signal and highlights the “Use Companion mode” button before users even join the call. The feature will also apparently avoid echo interference from other members. In other words, it should make the user experience a lot better. The echo interference, in particular, can be an annoying issue to deal with, especially if you can’t nail down where exactly it’s coming from.

When you join using the highlighted “Companion mode” button, users will also automatically check into the correct room. The Google Meet Automatic room check-in feature is now available across the Google Meet app and Gmail for Android and iOS. Users need to be using Meet v336.0 on Android and iOS or Gmail V6.0.251201.
