Google has been steadily pushing out its new Material 3 Expressive design language across its various apps and services. Now, if you’re someone who uses Google Messages extensively, it looks like Material 3 is headed your way to the chat screen.

Google Messages chat screen gets Material 3 Expressive

According to a 9to5Google report, it seems that Google is pushing out the Material 3 Expressive design to its Messages app, particularly the chat screen. The update will introduce design elements that some of you might be familiar with, especially if you’ve been using any of Google’s apps that have already been updated.

If not, then you will notice a few changes. For starters, on the homepage of Google Messages, the message thread has been placed in a container with curved corners at the top. The update also changes the background layer. It now features the app bar with phone/video calling shortcuts and the overflow menu. Lastly, Google has ditched the bubbly wallpaper for a solid color. Note that this wallpaper color changes based on your phone’s dark or light theme.

Some other changes include a container when you tap the “plus” menu in the text field. Google has ditched the colorful buttons for a monotone look. It now looks a bit more professional and modern. Also, these buttons are no longer circles, but have been changed to pill-shaped containers.

Google actually started testing out Material 3 Expressive back in June . It also introduced the redesign in the Wear OS version of the app . So, it’s good to see it make its way onto the phone version as well.

Major updates to Google Messages

The rollout of the update should bring a new and refreshed look to Google Messages. However, that’s not all Google has been doing. Over the past few months, we’ve seen Google make a concerted effort to turn Google Messages into more than just a place for your texts.

The app has to compete with other messenger apps, like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and more. These updates have introduced a bunch of new features, such as the ability to delete messages for everyone. The most recent update will soon allow users to verify who they are talking to in a bid to cut down on spam and scams.
