Google Photos is a great tool for your gallery and backup needs. But then again, there’s always room for improvement. Google probably knows this, hence it’s working on practical features. Backups in Google Photos, for years, only focused on data usage. Meaning users can choose whether backups happen over mobile data or Wi-Fi. These backups sometimes have a toll on your phone’s battery. This might change soon, as Google Photos is reportedly working on bringing a new battery feature.
Google Photos’ new feature will go easy on your phone’s battery
Folks at Android Authority, while digging through Google Photos V7.59, have discovered evidence of a new battery feature that’s in development. There’s a new toggle called “Optimize backup for battery life” in Google Photos ’ backup settings. This will reportedly focus on balancing backup performance with battery consumption.
The description of this toggle says that to preserve battery life, the device may back up less often when you’re not actively using the app . This will limit how Google Photos behaves in the background.

The device may back up less often
To put this into perspective, instead of constantly syncing every new photo or video moments after it’s captured. It will limit the background activity to preserve your phone’s battery life. A backup session may be only triggered once users open the app, but it can’t be said for certain, though. This could deprioritize background syncing for battery life. This seems to be a neat way to conserve battery life without entirely disabling backups. We’re not sure when this will roll out officially.
