Google had long ago signaled its plan to unify ChromeOS and Android into a single desktop platform known internally as Aluminium OS. Ever since then, there have been a lot of queries regarding the migration process and how the shift could affect existing ChromeOS users. Thankfully, a senior Google executive has now addressed these queries and has provided a better clarification regarding the migration process and continuity.
Google confirms not all Chromebooks will migrate to Aluminium OS
The Vice President of Product Management for ChromeOS, John Maletis, responded directly to community concerns in a private Ask Me Anything session hosted by Chrome Unboxed . To begin with, the executive pushed back on the claim that Google will soon abandon the ChromeOS. He says that millions of students, consumers, and workers depend on these devices daily, and the company will not end its support anytime soon.
Maletis also confirmed that the devices will continue to receive the update as per Google’s extended update promise. For reference, the tech giant promises automatic updates for ten years from a device launch. This particular assurance has relieved many. The official framed the transition from ChromeOS to Aluminium OS as an “evolution” and not a replacement. The step is designed to protect existing investments of the users and the institutions.
Further clarification on the migration process and device eligibility
The VP also responded to the questions related to the migration process with caution. He explained that not every Chromebook will be eligible for the migration , citing technical limitations. However, recent models and the upcoming devices should be eligible to move to the Aluminium OS stack.
Google wants to ensure that ChromeOS remains unaffected due to the development of Aluminium OS. Eligible devices will be recommended to migrate, while non-eligible ones will be provided support until the device reaches end-of-life. Furthermore, the ChromeOS will eventually be phased out. Most upcoming devices will boot on Aluminium OS right out of the box.
