At the Pixel 10 series launch event last month, Google introduced new AI features. One of these is the Writing Tools in Gboard . As the name suggests, this offers handy features like proofreading and rephrasing your text. This way, you don’t have to switch between apps for grammar checks. Shortly after the Pixel 10 announcement, these features found their way to older Pixel phones. However, Android Authority now reports that Gboard AI writing Tools are rolling out to non-Pixel devices as well.
Gboard AI Writing Tools on non-Pixel phones
The Gboard AI Writing Tools feature relies on the Gemini Nano model , which is available on select devices. This means that the feature runs on-device, and that text is never sent to the cloud. Gemini Nano is the smallest version of Google’s Gemini large language model (LLM), which debuted with the Pixel 8 Pro in 2023. However, it was limited to text-only input.
With Pixel 9, Google upgraded Gemini Nano with multimodal capabilities, enabling it to process images and audio as well. This new version then rolled out to phones from Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi.
Thanks to this extended support, Gboard’s AI Writing Tools feature is beginning to roll out to non-Pixel devices. Android Authority has spotted the feature on their OnePlus 13. Apparently, there was a new Writing Tools button, tapping which triggered a toast message saying to wait for the download to complete before using it. Once it’s ready, the feature lets you proofread and rephrase the text.

Writing Tools on OnePlus 13
In its support page, Google said that Gboard AI Writing Tools will be available on the Pixel 9 and later in English, French, Chinese, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. The fact that it’s showing up on a OnePlus 13 suggests that the feature won’t be exclusive to Pixel phones. It could be available on Android phones that support the multimodal Gemini Nano model, i.e., phones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite and Dimensity 9400 chip.
However, the report notes the Gboard Writing Tools feature is not available on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, hinting that it could be a limited rollout at the moment.
