Huawei is reportedly working on its next flagship smartphone, the Pura 90 Ultra, and the new leak reveals that it will feature a 200MP SmartSens camera . Apart from upgraded hardware, the device is also expected to bring a notable leap in overall photography and videography performance. Recent information also suggests that the tech giant has finalized a key sensor partner.

Huawei Pura 90 Ultra to feature a 200MP SmartSens telephoto

A known tipster has claimed that Huawei is planning to use a 200MP super telephoto camera with SmartSens’ sensor on its flagship Pura 90 Ultra device. Yes, the lens is not supplied by popular Sony and Samsung, but rather a lesser-known brand. The actual sensor is supposed to be SCC80XS, a periscope unit built on a 22nm process. The newer model will represent a significant upgrade over the previous generation , especially in terms of long-range zoom photography and stabilized telephoto performance.

SmartSens, the supplier of the sensor, describes SCC80XS as a high-performance CMOS image sensor designed for advanced smartphones. It uses a 1/1.28 inch format with 0.61 micrometer pixels and achieves around 80 percent quantum efficiency. Interestingly, the sensor is capable of recording up to 4K 120FPS videos while also maintaining low-noise levels.

One-inch main lens and other notable upgrades are on the way

Apart from the telephoto, the Huawei Pura 90 Ultra is said to feature a 50MP main lens with a 1-inch sensor. It may feature variable aperture support as well, though the supplier has not confirmed these details yet. The company is also exploring multiple sensor brands before finalizing the best one. This reflects the firm’s cautious approach to flagship imaging decisions ahead of mass production.

In the coming months, many Chinese smartphone manufacturers are going to release their top-of-the-line flagship. Most of which will feature a 200MP high-resolution periscope lens. Now, since Huawei is also joining the race, it would be interesting to see which brand rules the segment with its computational photography and overall image quality. A 200MP SmartSense solution paired with a large main sensor may help Huawei compete more aggressively at the top end.
