All smartphone screens have a glossy finish. This is usually done to highlight the deep and saturated colors in the display. However, the downside to having a glossy display is that it is very reflective. But the good news is that for the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro, Apple will introduce an anti-reflective display.
Anti-reflective display for the iPhone 17 Pro
A reliable source has spoken to MacRumors and revealed that one of the changes to the iPhone 17 Pro is the use of an anti-reflective display. This will apply to both the Pro and Pro Max models. It will also skip the base iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air. This is to be expected. Apple typically reserves newer tech for its higher-end models.
This isn’t the first time there have been rumors about the use of an anti-reflective display coating. There were rumors dating back to 2024, but now it has been suggested that it could debut in the 2025 iPhone lineup. The rumors claimed that Apple nearly cancelled the idea due to the manufacturing process. However, things have improved, and it is back on track.
That being said, we’re not sure what it will look like and if it could have an impact on colors. There are third-party matte screen protectors that sort of act as an anti-reflective barrier. However, we’re not sure if this means the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will have a matte screen. Also, we’re not sure how this will work if users were to use a screen protector with the phone and how it might impact the overall visibility.
Not Apple’s first rodeo
Interestingly enough, this isn’t Apple’s first time introducing special coatings to its displays. Both the Apple Pro Display XDR and Studio Display monitors have the option for nano-textured glass. This is supposed to help cut back on reflections. It’s actually pretty cool to see Apple bring something similar to its iPhones.
Once again, we’re not sure if it will have the same effect, but it could be useful for users who don’t want to have to buy an extra screen protector.
That being said, it might not be a bad idea to get a screen protector anyway. The displays on our phones are usually one of the first to break when we drop them. Having a screen protector helps protect the main display of your phone. This will save you money from having to repair it, especially if you plan to sell or trade it in later on.
