To be honest, Apple’s ultra-slim phone, the iPhone Air, didn’t quite achieve the success the company had hoped for. It appears that the tradeoffs to the battery and camera departments didn’t really please consumers across the globe. For what it’s worth, the company is reportedly working on improving these on the successor. In a new development, Apple is reportedly considering making the iPhone Air 2 thinner with this new technology.

iPhone Air 2’s screen could be thinner and brighter, courtesy of the CoE technology

Apple is reportedly considering a new screen technology originally intended for the iPhone Fold. However, it could use this for the next generation of the iPhone Air. As per a report from The Elec ( via ), the iPhone Air 2 could carry a Color Filter on Encap (CoE) technology. This apparently will allow the screen to be thinner and brighter without increasing power consumption.

The CoE technology works by eliminating the polarization layer on the screen panel and replacing it with a more efficient color filter system. This will reduce light reflections and allow the panel to pass more light to the user. This technology would allow it to increase the brightness level with the same amount of power consumption as the previous generation screen.

Apple is reportedly considering using Samsung’s CoE packaging technology

It was reported that the CoE technology will debut on the iPhone Fold, which is launching later this year. However, it now appears that Apple is toying with the idea of utilizing similar technology on the iPhone Air 2. This is because the phone prioritizes thin design and power efficiency. If this indeed pans out, iPhone Air 2 will be the first iPhone model to benefit from this new generation screen technology.

Apple could use Samsung’s CoE packaging technology . Samsung Display reportedly can produce CoE panels and plans to increase its production capacity upon adaptation. Then there’s LG Display, which is also reportedly considering the CoE production line. However, it doesn’t have a dedicated facility for the technology. Having said this, Apple may take a final call regarding the use of CoE on the iPhone Air at least in Q3 2026. Besides the screen, there could be other new technologies that we may see on the iPhone Air 2.

Speaking of the timeline, the report notes that the iPhone Air series will not see a yearly release. The Air 2 may see light in the day in 2027. However, we’ve also been hearing rumors claiming a 2026 launch.
