The problem with a lot of foldable phones is the aspect ratio is kind of weird. It tends to be more tall than wide, but of course when you unfold it, it’s not a bad size. However, that’s the problem Apple aims to tackle with the shape of its upcoming foldable iPhone .

Apple’s foldable iPhone will have a unique shape

In a recent report from The Information , Apple is focusing on the shape of the foldable iPhone to resemble that of a tablet more than a phone. What this means is that instead of the foldable display on the inside being more square shaped, it will be more rectangular.

The report claims that when closed, the outer display of the phone measures 5.3-inches. This makes it smaller than the displays of Apple’s iPhone Pro models. However, when opened, the device will measure 7.7-inches. That’s roughly around the size of Apple’s iPad mini series.

The Information’s report echoes that of tipster Digital Chat Station , whose recent post suggested the outer display will measure around 5.25-inches and the inner display will measure 7.58-inches. It’s an interesting approach because right now, the aspect ratio of foldables is kind of weird.

It’s not wide enough to be a tablet, but it’s still too big for regular apps. Developers will need to optimize their apps for it. However, Apple’s approach could simplify the process. It could leverage iPad apps, which means that out of the gate, there are apps that can take advantage of the display’s size and width.

Samsung’s gunning for Apple

That being said, Apple could have some stiff competition from Samsung next year. The Korean tech giant is expected to debut its Galaxy Z Fold 8. However, a recent report suggests that Samsung could also be exploring the idea of a wider foldable . This would put it squarely up against the foldable iPhone.

Also, Samsung could one up Apple with larger displays. The latest report from Digital Chat Station claims the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could pack a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch foldable display. This would give Samsung a considerable advantage over Apple, especially for users who plan to use the cover display more.

Not only that, the cameras are also supposed to be better. Cameras on foldable phones always feel like an after thought, but the Fold 8 could change that. While the jury is still out on the Fold 8’s cameras, the foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a 48MP rear camera and a 12MP ultrawide. That’s not that hard to beat.

In any case, we’ll have to wait for 2026 to see. So far, it sounds like 2026 is shaping up to be a battle of the foldables.
