The popular Lego group has launched its Smart Play , a new line of interactive bricks, at the CES 2026 event. The newly announced system comes with sensors, speakers, and wireless features to familiar pieces without relying on cameras or generative AI. With this move, the company signals a major shift in its strategy. It opens official paths for smarter play, experimentation, and hands-on creativity among builders, families, and curious thinkers worldwide today and beyond.
Lego announces Smart Bricks at the CES event
The newly announced Smart Play is built around three key elements: the Smart Brick, Smart Tag, and Smart Minifigures. Each Smart Brick consists of sensors, accelerometers, light and sound detection, and a small speaker powered by an onboard synthesizer. It also brings the support of wireless charging to keep the design clean and durable. Interactions will take place through Smart Tags using NFC . Smart Figures, on the other hand, will store character data. This will enable builds to react when figures are placed or moved.
Lego has avoided the use of cameras and generative AI and has also explained why. The firm says that it has done so to ensure that the main focus of the Smart Play remains on physical play and predictable behavior. This step makes the gadget approachable (and safe) for children while also appealing to hobbyists. It embeds the computing elements directly into bricks, which is what the fans have been doing unofficially for quite a while now.
Lego says the product is designed to be future-proof
Lego says that it has designed Smart Play in such a way that it ensures long-term support. The standardized parts can be reused across themes, encouraging experimentation, classroom use, and creative hacking. This also eliminates the need to learn complex programming languages or rely on external screens for guidance.
To commercially launch the Smart Play, Lego is leaning on Star Wars. The company, at the CES 2026 , reveals three themed building sets designed to showcase the technology. This includes Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, Luke’s Red Five X-wing, and a Throne Room Duel with an A-wing. As for the pricing, it starts from $69.99 and goes up to $159.99. Pre-orders will begin on January 9, and the official release is scheduled for March 1.
