Google announced its new Android redesign, Material 3 Expressive, in May this year. Since then, the makeover has been rolling out to first-party apps like Gmail, Keep, Contacts, and others. Now, it’s Google’s browser’s turn. Chrome app for Android is now getting the taste of Material 3 Expressive . This change brings rounded buttons up top and a brighter overflow menu.
Chrome for Android gets Material 3 Expressive
Chrome Canary build back in June offered a preview of the Material 3 Expressive. Now, 9to5Google has spotted the redesign rolling out to Chrome for Android on Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1. The Omnibox interface is largely the same. However, the split progress indicator replaces the traditional loading bar. This features rounder corners, giving it a more modern look.
Chrome’s three-dot menu also sees a makeover. When you tap the three-dot menu, forward, bookmark, download, site info, and refresh buttons are highlighted as they are now present in large circular boxes. This apparently makes it easier to spot and separate them from the list of options present below. Also, there’s no longer anything that separates the top bar icons from the bottom menu.

Limited availability
The Tab Grid page is also seeing a redesign. Firstly, the ‘Plus’ button for a new tab is present within a rounded square box. There’s a new Incognito icon in the tab grid page alongside total tabs and tab groups. These are also placed inside a rectangular container.
Furthermore, for Tab Groups, the frame of an unselected group now has the color you chose. Before this change, the entire tab group was just a solid color . Chrome for Android Material 3 Expressive changes are reportedly present in version 139 on Pixel 10 as well as Android 16QPR2 Beta 1. The makeover doesn’t appear to be widely available just yet, but it could arrive shortly.
