We know that MediaTek’s more recent Dimensity 9000 series of chipsets have been gaining a lot of attention lately. After all, the company largely had the image of being the “budget” Qualcomm, but with its 9000 series, it proved that it can more than hold its own. But if you’re not looking to spend good money on a flagship, don’t worry, MediaTek has you covered with its latest Dimensity 7100 chipset .
Meet the MediaTek Dimensity 7100
First of, the thing to note is that unlike the Dimensity 9000 series, the MediaTek Dimensity 7100 isn’t built on the 3nm process. Instead, it uses an older 6nm process. But this isn’t a bad thing. While most companies chase 2nm and 3nm chips , there is still room for older processes.
For instance, not every device needs to have the most cutting-edge tech. Plus, the 6nm process has been well-established, which makes it more reliable to produce and cheaper. This allows MediaTek to position the chipset for mid-range devices that are aimed at customers shopping on smaller budgets.
So, what can we expect from the chipset ? According to the company, the Dimensity 7100 features an 8-core CPU setup. This includes four Cortex-A78 performance cores clocked at up to 2.4GHz. Then, there are four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores clocked at 2.0GHz. This allows the chip to switch between performance and efficiency depending on the task at hand.
As for graphics, users can look forward to the Arm Mali-G610 GPU, which is apparently up to 8% faster than its predecessor.
Built for efficiency
Obviously for budget and mid-range devices, performance isn’t necessarily the key factor . This is why MediaTek designed its chipset with a greater emphasis on efficiency. The company claims that it is 5% more efficient during app usage, and up to 16% more efficient for multimedia playback. If you’re constantly online watching videos, you can also look forward to up to 23% more modem efficiency.
The chipset itself supports LPDDR5 RAM with speeds of up to 5,500Mbps. It also supports UFS 3.1 storage, WiFi 6, and Bluetooth 5.4. It will also support phones with camera sensors up to 200MP, with HDR imaging, multi-frame noise reduction, and hardware-accelerated face detection.
At the moment, there is no word on which phones will support the Dimensity 7100. However, 2026 is around the corner so we should start seeing these devices pop up soon enough.
