Apple is reportedly working on two of its quite popular accessories, the HomePod mini and AirTag. New evidence found in a leaked internal build of iOS 26 , as seen by Macworld , reveals some key details about the unreleased HomePod mini and AirTag, suggesting notable upgrades are in the offing.
Next-generation HomePod mini and AirTag may get significant upgrades
To jog your memory, HomePod mini went official way back in 2020 as a cheaper alternative to the larger HomePod. This means it was due for an upgrade. According to Apple’s internal code, a new HomePod mini is on its way. The report notes that the new version has the codename B252, aligning with earlier reports. This could feature the S10 chip, found in the latest Apple Watch models. For comparison, the current model runs on a dated S5 chip, so we’re definitely in for a significant upgrade in terms of performance and wireless reliability.
However, the report notes that despite the new chip, the upcoming HomePod mini may not support Apple Intelligence AI features. This is likely reserved for the Apple smart home hub, which may arrive with an A18 chip and could be capable of running AI features.
AirTag 2 may edge out Android trackers
Besides the HomePod mini, the report sheds some light on Apple’s AirTag 2. The new tracker may arrive with a handful of new features, including an improved pairing process, detailed battery level reporting, and enhanced Prevision Finding. There’s apparently a new “Improved Moving” feature. This will likely allow users to find the precise location of an AirTag even when it’s moving, which is a limitation of the current AirTag. There’s also a feature to improve accurate tracking in crowded places.
These capabilities are tagged internally as “2025AirTag.” This hints that the product was originally scheduled to launch this year, but that didn’t happen. The new AirTag could debut in the first half of 2026. Rumors are rife that the AirTag 2 may get an upgraded ultra-wideband chip , which should improve the Precision Finding feature.
There is are chance that some of the new features may arrive for the current AirTag via a software update. This means you don’t have to upgrade unless you really want the new version.
