OnePlus has already announced that the OnePlus 15R will be announced next month . And now we’re starting to see some more information trickle out about the new device.

Following Qualcomm’s announcement this morning of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 , OnePlus confirmed that is the chip that will be used in the OnePlus 15R.

“Qualcomm Technologies is proud to collaborate with OnePlus for their newest device powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Mobile Platform,” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager, mobile handset, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “By combining our latest premium platform with OnePlus’s commitment to performance, we’re enabling users to experience new levels of speed, intelligence, and efficiency.”

OnePlus also mentioned that this is part of the Snapdragon 8 Series that already powers other powerful devices in the R series, like the OnePlus 11R, OnePlus 12R and OnePlus 13R.

The OnePlus 15R is set to be announced on December 17. So we still have a few more weeks befor the device is made official.

OnePlus has worked with Qualcomm for 2 years on this chip

OnePlus also provided some background on the OnePlus 15R and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, including the fact that the two companies have been working on tuning this chip for the OnePlus 15R for the past 24 months, with the specs being final in December 2024. That’s much longer than the typical 4-month chip tuning process.

OnePlus says that they have conducted in-depth joint tuning across seven key areas: performance, gaming, imaging, AI, display, connectivity, and network. Perhaps this means it’ll perform better than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 that powers the OnePlus 15 .

In fact, OnePlus and Qualcomm designed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 jointly. So we may not see many other OEMs using this chipset. To that point, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is the first flagship chip that Qualcomm has ever co-created.
