Samsung announced two new flagship foldable smartphones this month. In this article, we’ll compare those two phones. We’ll be comparing the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 specs. These are both very compelling devices, but they’re notably different. They are both foldables, but entirely different types of foldables. The Fold 7 is a book-style foldable, while the Flip 7 is a flip phone foldable.

As such, they’re aimed at completely different types of users, but still, comparing them does make sense. They’re both foldables, and they’re basically siblings, the very best Samsung has to offer in terms of foldables. We will first list the specs of both smartphones, as we usually do. Following that, we’ll compare their designs, displays, performance, battery life, cameras, and audio output. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Design

The two devices do look notably different, which is to be expected. They’re different types of foldables after all. What they have in common is that they’re made out of aluminum and glass, with some titanium added in the hinge department. They’re the most similar when the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is folded and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is unfolded, of course. Both phones have a centered display camera hole on one of their displays. On the Fold 7’s cover display and on the Flip 7’s main panel.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has sharper angles in comparison. Both smartphones have their power/lock and volume keys on the right-hand side, those are the only physical keys there. Both phones have a flat frame all around. The Galaxy Z Flip 7’s display takes up half of the back of the phone now, as the bezels are thinner, and the display itself is larger than on the previous Flip phone.

You’ll notice that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has three vertically-aligned cameras in the top-left corner. Those cameras sit on top of a pill-shaped camera island. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 has two cameras on the back, and they’re sitting side-by-side in the top-left corner of the phone’s back size. Both smartphones are IP48 certified for water and dust resistance. When unfolded, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is both taller and wider than the Fold 7 in a folded form. When folded, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is much thinner, compared to a folded Galaxy Z Flip 7. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a lot lighter, however, even though the Fold 7 is very light for a book-style foldable. They’re both rather slippery.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 features an 8-inch Foldable Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X main display. That panel has an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz), and it supports HDR10+ content. The peak brightness here is 2,600 nits, while the screen-to-body ratio is at around 90%. The resolution this display offers is 2184 x 1968. The cover display measures 6.5 inches, and it’s a Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X panel. Its refresh rate is adaptive (1-120Hz), while the Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 protects it. The resolution is 2520 x 1080.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a 6.9-inch Foldable Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X main panel. That display offers a resolution of 2520 x 1080, and it supports an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz). HDR10+ content is supported, while the peak brightness is 2,600 nits. The screen-to-body ratio is at around 88%, while the display aspect ratio is 21:9. The cover display measures 4.1 inches, that’s a Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The resolution is 1048 x 948, while the peak brightness is 2,600 nits. The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects this panel.

All four of these displays are very good, actually. They’re all vivid, have great viewing angles, and are more than sharp enough. The touch response is also good, while the blacks are as deep as you’d expect them to be. Samsung even improved the crease visibility compared to their predecessors. There’s really not much to complain about here. It would be nice if they offered a high-frequency PWM dimming, but that’s basically our only complaint.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Performance

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, a 3nm chip. That is Qualcomm’s most powerful chip, well, an overclocked version of it. The phone ships with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM in most markets, though in some it comes with up to 16GB. It uses UFS 4.0 flash storage.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7, on the other hand, is fueled by the Samsung Exynos 2500 processor. That is also a 3nm processor, and the most powerful one the company has to offer at this point. That chip is combined with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM here, and the phone uses UFS 4.0 flash storage. The storage is not expandable on either device.

We haven’t yet fully reviewed either of these two smartphones at this point, but we did use them for a while. The day-to-day performance seems to be good on both of them. We’ll talk more about it in our full reviews, but it’s good. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is a more powerful chip, however, and that could come into play when it comes to gaming, especially with higher-end games. We’ll see.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Battery

A 4,400mAh battery sits inside the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Galaxy Z Flip 7, on the other hand, features a 4,300mAh battery on the inside. Neither of these two battery packs, well, its capacities, are particularly high compared to the competition. In fact, most of the competitors offer notably more battery capacity. Still, the battery life on both of these phones seems to be perfectly fine, at least based on initial testing.

As mentioned several times thus far, our full reviews are coming, but the battery life that we’ve been able to get from these two devices is better than last year. They’ll be able to carry most people until the very end of the day, as Samsung has seemingly did a fine job optimizing battery consumption, despite the fact that these batteries are rather modest.

Charging is an are where neither phone impresses. They both actually support the same charging speeds across the board. 25W wired, 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging is supported on both devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 takes around an hour and 25 minutes to fully charge, while the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will charge up slightly faster. Neither phone ships with a charger in the box.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has three cameras on the back. A 200-megapixel main camera (1/1.3-inch sensor size) is backed by a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (120-degree FoV). The last camera on the back is a regular telephoto unit, unfortunately. Samsung included a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (3x optical zoom).

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7

The Galaxy Z Flip 7, on the other hand, has only two cameras on its back. A 50-megapixel main camera (1/1.57-inch sensor size) is the star of the show here. The other camera on the back is an ultrawide unit, and it’s inferior to the main one. It’s a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (1/3.2-inch sensor size, 123-degree FoV).

Samsung upgraded the Fold 7’s main camera, which is a considerable upgrade. The same cannot be said for the Flip 7, as things remain unchanged compared to the Flip 6. The same goes for its ultrawide camera. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 does offer better performance in the camera department as far as its main camera goes. It even offers better telephoto shots, even though they’re not that great, but the Flip 7 does not have a telephoto camera at all, so… there you go. The performance from their ultrawide cameras are similar. More on that in our full reviews, which are coming.

Audio

Yes, both of these smartphones have stereo speakers. They’re similar in terms of loudness and sound output, actually, very similar. They’re good on both fronts, though keep in mind these are smartphone speakers. Don’t expect miracles, there are better speakers on phones out there.

There is no audio jack on either of these two smartphones. You can use their Type-C ports to connect your wired headphones, if you want. Alternatively, both smartphones support Bluetooth 5.4 for wireless connectivity.
