Google had something interesting to say about an IP68 certification . The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the first foldable that comes with an IP68 certification, which is impressive, but it got Google to say something that we knew, and yet never really thought of.

Google asks that you read the fine print despite the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s IP68 rating

Yes, IP68 certification means that your phone is both water and dust-resistant, but that doesn’t last. Phone sealants do wear away over time. If you expose your phone to salt or chlorine, you can speed up the process. The same goes for phone drops, dents, and cracks.

It is also worth noting that your warranty doesn’t cover liquid damage. If water gets inside of your phone, which is an IP68 certified, it’s basically proof for the company that you damaged it.

Google said that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is “ Designed to comply with dust and water protection rating IP68 under IEC standard 60529 when each device leaves the factory, but the device is not water or dust proof. ”

The company also added that “ Water resistance and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and will diminish or be lost over time due to normal wear and tear, device repair, disassembly or damage. ”

Dropping the device may results in loss of water/dust resistance

Google continued: “ Phone is not drop/tumble proof and dropping your device may result in loss of water/dust resistance. Damage from drops, tumbles, and other external forces are not covered under warranty. Liquid damage voids the warranty. ”

Just to be clear, none of this information is new, but it does give you a clear idea of what to expect. It will also push some of you to be more careful when using your phones, that’s for sure. Just because a phone is IP68 certified it doesn’t mean you should expose it to water and dust, that’s for sure. That’s even more true for foldables.
