One of the advantages of console games is that developers have to work within the limits of the console’s hardware. This means that whatever games are designed for the console will run perfectly. This is unlike PC games, where your current setup might not be good enough. That being said, this doesn’t mean consoles cannot be improved upon. According to a recent Digital Foundry video, they suggest that the PlayStation 6 could come with 24GB of RAM .
PlayStation 6 to feature 24GB RAM
At the moment, the Sony PlayStation 5 has 16GB of RAM. Considering the type of games available for the console, it is impressive how developers have pulled off amazing-looking games with 16GB of RAM, whereas on PC, some games require 32GB of RAM in order to achieve the console-level quality of graphics.
However, 16GB of RAM only gets you so far. In the video, the experts at Digital Foundry speculated that Sony could bring up the RAM to 24GB for the PlayStation 6. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but a bump to 24GB makes sense. It is expected that the extra RAM could be used for ray tracing and machine learning. After all, AI is the current trend and we wouldn’t be surprised if Sony were to introduce AI features in its next-gen console.
Also, the price of DRAM is pretty high right now. This means that going beyond 24GB of RAM could be cost-prohibitive and could result in the console being priced higher than Sony would like. Let’s not forget that Trump’s incoming tariffs will definitely have an impact on the industry. There are already talks that Sony might have to increase the price of its PS5 console.
The PS6 is coming anytime soon
That being said, don’t get too excited about seeing the Sony PS6 anytime soon. Based on past releases, Sony usually has a 7-year gap between launches. The PS3 launched in 2006 and was followed by the PS4 in 2013. Then the PS5 came in 2020. This means that when Sony does get around to releasing the PS6, it will most likely be in 2026 or 2027, or possibly even later.
Also, let’s not forget that the gaming landscape is constantly changing. These days, gamers are spending more time (and money) on mobile games. This is why Sony is rumored to be planning a handheld console . There will still be a need for home-based consoles, but if its handheld console takes off, who knows? Maybe Sony could focus more of its efforts on the mobile space .
