Sony has just pushed out the latest PS5 system software update , and it includes, of all things, a long-awaited feature that is a huge quality-of-life upgrade, specifically, a capability for simultaneous pairing of the PS5 controller to multiple devices. Sony teased this feature prior to the update going out and announced it as part of the latest beta update that was released earlier this year. Now, it’s finally available for all users and not just beta testers.
In addition to the simultaneous controller pairing, the PS5 update also includes a few other things. The other big change is the new Power Saver feature . This is intended for those who want to use less energy when playing games on their PS5. It lessens power consumption by scaling back performance. So, the PS5 will intentionally scale back performance in certain games. All to save you some energy usage. Not all games will support this, it seems. However, Sony mentions that an indicator will appear when this mode is enabled and there is a game that supports it.
Simultaneous controller pairing on the PS5 lets you easily swap the controller to another device
For many people, this is probably going to be the biggest part of the update . It might seem minor. However, think about how much this opens up your play sessions. It’s now possible to pair the controller to a PS5, a PC, and a mobile device, all at the same time. You can then hit a button combination to swap the controller to a different active device.
For example, say you’re playing a game on PS5 , but then want to switch to a new game on PC to play with some friends. You can swap your controller to the PC by just holding down the corresponding button combo. No having to repair the controller to the PC. This will make things much faster. To pair the controller to multiple devices, the process is pretty easy.
You hold down the PS button, and a corresponding action button (i.e., the circle, triangle, square, or cross button) for over 5 seconds. The light bar and player indicator light will flash twice. Then just select a Bluetooth device from the devices you’re trying to pair with as you normally would. Once you have multiple devices paired, switching is just as easy. Simply press the corresponding action button and the PS button for about 3 seconds once your device is on. The light bar and player indicator will blink, and then you can release both buttons. And you’re good to go. You’ll need to make sure your PS5 is updated and that your controller software is updated to use this feature.
