Qualcomm has just confirmed the name of its upcoming flagship processor , it’s the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. So, the rumors turned out to be true , as Qualcomm once again decided to change the name of its most powerful chip.

The company stuck to a singular name for three years with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Then, last year, the company decided to launch the chip under the Snapdragon 8 Elite name.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the name of Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship chip

One would assume that this year’s chip will be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, but no, Qualcomm decided against that. This year’s chip will be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which makes the Snapdragon 8 Elite the ‘Gen 4’, basically.

Qualcomm confirmed this via an official blog post on Sunday. The company says that it’s adopting the ‘Gen 5’ part, while keeping the ‘Elite’ branding to show that it’s “reinforcing its leadership position and simplifying how consumers understand our product roadmap. Think of it like this: Gen 5 isn’t just a number. It’s a signal that this platform leads the family forward.”

The company doesn’t even see this as a name change, actually

Qualcomm doesn’t even see this as a name change. In the blog post, the company asked a question, and answer it. The question is: “Was there a change in your naming strategy” , and the answer is: “Nope.”

The company sees the Snapdragon 8 Elite as a chip that debuted the ‘Elite’ name, kind of, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 as the continuation of what was already there, combined with the ‘Elite’ name.

Qualcomm also added the following: “Our naming reflects a combination of factors: performance capabilities, launch timing and how each platform fits within our broader portfolio. So, while the naming may look new, it’s actually a continuation of our established framework — one that evolves with the technology it represents.”

The company also said that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is a part of a broader roadmap. We can expect to see more mobile platforms adopt Gen 5 as well, which means we’ll get some inferior processors with that naming, too. The ‘Elite’ signals the flagship, however.

We’ll get all the necessary details about this chip later this month

As many of you know by now, the Snadpragon Summit will take place in Maui, Hawaii, later this month. The official dates are September 23-25.
