For anyone who relies on AI to look up information, whether for personal or professional use, know that AI can hallucinate. This means that sometimes the information it gives you could be wrong or just completely made up. This is also why it’s important to double-check before taking what AI says as gospel. Unfortunately, not everyone does, which is why restaurants are calling out Google AI over fake restaurant deals .
Google AI giving fake restaurant deals
We’re sure some of you have come across posts on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, or X/Twitter from so-called “prompt experts”. These posts often claim that using AI tools like ChatGPT have saved them “thousands of dollars” on flights, hotels, and more. This is supposedly done by using AI to scour the web for deals.
This is why some business owners are now calling out Google and its AI for providing false information to customers about restaurant deals and specials. Stefanina’s Pizzeria in Wentzville made a post on social media to point out the problem.
According to the post, “Please do not use Google AI to find out our specials. Please go to our Facebook page or our website. Google AI is not accurate and is telling people specials that do not exist, which is causing angry customers to yell at our employees. We cannot control what Google posts or says, and we will not honor the Google AI specials.”
Speaking to KMOV, Jonathan Hanahan, a Washington University Professor who uses and teaches artificial intelligence, says that sometimes these inaccuracies show up as a result of the prompt. This can result in information that is skewed or has confirmation bias.
Not the first time this has happened
The AI models can actually provide accurate diagnosis, but because human users sometimes leave out bits of information, it doesn’t give the AI the full picture, leading to an inaccurate diagnosis. This could be one of the issues users face when relying on AI tools like Google’s AI Overview .
In any case, this makes for a strong case of not being overly reliant on AI, as well as always double-checking the information before assuming anything.
