According to a new report, Samsung is actually planning to announce a wider Galaxy Z Fold device to compete with Apple ’s first foldable iPhone. As a reminder, the alleged design of Apple’s first foldable iPhone surfaced a couple of days ago , and Apple is going a different direction than the rest of the market.

Samsung is allegedly planning to launch a wider foldable to compete with Apple

Apple plans to release a much shorter and wider foldable (when folded) than the rest of the market. That also means that it will be considerably wider when unfolded, and thus ideal for video consumption. You’ll also be able to rotate it by 90 degrees to get something much closer to a portrait view. Book-style foldables these days are basically squares when unfolded.

In any case, the information regarding a wider foldable from Samsung comes from Korea, from ETNews, to be exact. The source reports that the company will announce this phone in addition ot the Galaxy Z Fold 8, not instead of it. So the company will stick to its planned strategy, but offer another choice to consumers.

Samsung obviously does not want consumers to perceive the first foldable iPhone as something groundbreaking that Apple came up with, as Ice Universe, a tipster, nicely pointed out on X . Thus, Samsung plans to announce its wider foldable prior to the iPhone launch.

A 7.6-inch main display is expected, along with a 5.4-inch cover panel

Samsung’s wider foldable allegedly has a 7.6-inch main, foldable display, along with a 5.4-inch cover display. A 4:3 aspect ratio will be available on the main screen, basically. It is also rumored to support 25W wired charging, and it could offer Qi2.2 wireless charging and have magnets built in.

The foldable iPhone, on the other hand, is said to have a 5.3-inch cover display and a 7.58-inch foldable display. That will also be a 4:3 aspect ratio when you unfold the device. These two will compete directly.

Such moves make us think of the OPPO Find N and Find N2 , as I’ve already mentioned when the design of the foldable iPhone surfaced. OPPO tried to do something similar a couple of years ago, but ultimately caved and aligned with Samsung’s vision for a book-style foldable form factor.

I, personally, still believe in the initial vision from OPPO. A book-style foldable should be smaller when folded, short, and wide. Then, when unfolded, it should lean more towards a landscape form factor, than a square one. To each their own, but it will be interesting to see where will book-style foldables go from this point on.
