The very first smartphones to utilize the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor have been confirmed. As many of you have probably guessed, it’s the Xiaomi 17 series.

The Xiaomi 17 series will be first to utilize the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip

To be entirely accurate, the Xiaomi 17 series was not mentioned per se, but Xiaomi’s CEO did confirm that Xiaomi will be the first to utilize the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 . Even without the confirmation of the phones themselves, we basically know what’s coming.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, did this via X, as he said that he’s “proud to be the first to bring the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 to market,” speaking in the company’s name, of course. He also added that Xiaomi is “excited about what this platform unlocks for our next generation of flagship experiences.”

Now, this does not mean that you’ll be able to purchase the Xiaomi 17 series before any other Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. Why? Well, because the Xiaomi 17 series is expected to launch in China today, but not globally.

The Xiaomi 17 is coming to global markets, but not that soon

While at least one device is expected to make its way to global markets, that likely won’t happen before Q1 next year. At least that was the case last year with the Xiaomi 15 series.

With that being said, the Xiaomi 17 ser i es will consist of the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. Those devices are expected to debut later today , as Xiaomi confirmed the launch event recently.

Xiaomi opted to jump over the Xiaomi 16 name entirely, to bring the name of its flagship smartphone series in line with what Apple is offering. As many of you know, Apple is now on the iPhone 17 series. Even the ‘Pro Max’ name was adopted by Xiaomi.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the chip that will fuel these phones, was announced yesterday. It was announced during the Snapdragon Summit 2025 in Hawaii.
