Do you care about the quality of the music you’re listening to? Many people are fine with whatever they get, but there’s a niche that prefers the highest quality possible. Spotify, despite being so popular, has long lacked an offering that would target these particular needs. However, the wait for Spotify Lossless audio feature is finally over.
Spotify Lossless now available
So, what will you be getting? According to Spotify, its Lossless feature offers up to 24bit/44.1kHz FLAC playback. This means that you’re getting quality, which, on paper, is better than CDs. However, whether or not you’ll be able to tell the difference is another story. According to Spotify, it recommends that you stream Lossless over WiFi or wired speakers or headphones. The company notes that Bluetooth currently doesn’t provide enough bandwidth to support Lossless.
Also, your audio gear needs to be of a certain quality to truly appreciate the differences. If all you’ve got is a pair of $10 computer speakers, then it’s not going to matter.
What is lossless audio?
Lossless audio is basically uncompressed audio. Think of it as the difference between an uncompressed photo taken straight out of your camera versus a JPG image you received on WhatsApp. The goal of lossless audio is to preserve the original recording . This means that you’ll be listening to what the artist intended for you to hear.
That said, if you want to check out the Spotify Lossless feature, the company says it won’t be available to everyone just yet. The company is rolling out the feature as we speak to over 50 regions. When it is available, Spotify will let you know. After that, you just need to go to the Spotify app , tap on your profile icon in the top left, go to Settings & Privacy, select Media Quality, and enable lossless audio.

Spotify says that users have to enable it manually on each device. You’ll also know when you’re streaming in lossless via the indicator that shows up in the Now Play view or bar.
