If you hate T-Mobile’s T-Life app, you might have heard of a recent “hack” shared by a T-Mobile employee on Reddit. The “hack” involved insisting on paying by cash , which you can bypass the fuss of using the app. The bad news is that T-Mobile caught wind of it and closed that loophole with a recent change to the app.

T-Mobile app change closes loophole

According to a post on Reddit and a T-Mobile employee who spoke to PhoneArena , the carrier made a recent change to the app that closes the cash loophole. Now in the T-Life app, there’s a cash payment option.

Prior to this, transactions that were made using digital payment methods were done using T-Life. Customers who did not want to use T-Life could pay by cash, as per the hack shared by the employee. However, with this change, it looks like customers and employees will have no choice but to rely 100% on T-Life.

You can still walk into a T-Mobile store for help, but it seems that employees are there just to guide customers through the process. So by hook or by crook, T-Mobile wants all its customers to use T-Life for core transactions.

No love for T-Life

That being said, T-Life wouldn’t be so bad if there weren’t so many issues at the start. The app was glitchy at launch, and T-Mobile’s aggressive approach did not help. According to anonymous employee reports, T-Mobile basically “forced” both employees and customers to use the app.

Employees who could not convince customers to use T-Life had to write detailed reports. It also alienated older customers who aren’t so technologically proficient. However, we can’t say we’re surprised that this is T-Mobile’s strategy moving forward. Many other companies are also turning to apps for all sorts of things.

Some companies, like Luckin Coffee in China, rely 100% on its app. Customers who want to order a coffee have to place an order through the app, even if they’re at the store. In any case, we can only hope T-Mobile will eventually improve the T-Life experience, where customers are more than happy to use it.
