Open TikTok or Instagram Reels these days and you’ll notice there’s a lot of AI-generated content. But the good news is that if you’re not a fan of AI content, TikTok is giving you a bit more control over it. The company has announced that it is experimenting with a new feature that will allow users to control the amount of AI content they see on TikTok.

TikTok giving users control over AI content on their feed

According to TikTok, users will soon have more control over AI content shown on their feed. This will come in the form of a toggle that will roll out in the coming weeks. Users will be able to find it in the app’s “manage topics” section. This section already allows users to personalize the type of videos that show up on their feed. Soon, users can also use it to reduce the amount of AI-generated videos they sell as well.

TikTok says, “This means that people who love AI-generated history content can see more of this content, while those who’d rather see less can choose to dial things down. It adds to the suite of tools that help people personalize content recommendations and discover more of what they love—like customizable keyword filters and our “not interested” button.”

The company is also looking to address the ability to correctly identify videos generated by AI. At the moment, TikTok uses a system called Content Credentials that adds metadata to AI-generated content. However, when these videos are edited in other apps, it can be harder to detect. So much so that TikTok plans to experiment with an additional “invisible watermarking” system that has the potential to label AI content more reliably.

The rise of AI content

That being said, it’s not hard to see why AI content is on the rise. Companies like OpenAI and Google have made it extremely easy for users to generate videos with a few simple prompts. In a way, it’s a good thing. It allows users who have ideas but don’t have the chops to make fun and entertaining videos.

The downside is that many of these AI videos out there are terribly made. It’s what many refer to as “AI slop.” There are some good ones, but honestly, the bad ones tend to outnumber them. We’re not saying AI content is necessarily bad, but for those who still prefer more traditionally-made content, this toggle will help with that.
