What is 6G ? If your answer is that it’s the successor to 5G, you’d be correct to a certain degree. But what 6G is definitely not is a camera that lets you see into someone’s skin, because that’s what US President Donald Trump thinks it is .
Trump thinks 6G has to do with cameras
Speaking on live TV, Trump was quoted as saying, “So we’re into 6G now, yeesh. 5G — I was a leader on 5G, getting that done, and now they’re up to 6. What does that do, give you a little bit deeper view into somebody’s skin? See how perfect it is. I liked the cameras of the old days. Sort of just had a nice feature. Now they cover every little, let’s see Michael, you’re in good shape, you’re not going to… but I tell you… so the six is coming, hunh? It’s coming. Does it ever end? And what happens? You’ll be into seven, right? Before six gets old, you’ll be into seven.”
Yup, so based on his remarks, Trump thinks 6G has to do with cameras or some kind of video quality . And what’s worrying and slightly disturbing is that this was a public event with Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, who did not bother to correct him at all.
So, what is 6G, if it’s not about cameras?
6G can be considered the evolution of 5G . However, it isn’t just about speed. Yes, the speed increase from 4G to 5G was considerable, and we expect similar improvements going from 5G to 6G as well.
However, the main difference lies in AI . While 5G networks have support for AI, they’re typically added after the fact. With 6G, it is expected to feature native AI integration. We can also expect things like better sensing, digital twinning, and more. The more interesting feature is actually sensing.
What this does is that it allows network towers to be utilized as sensors . It can be used to detect vehicles on the road, perfect for self-driving cars, and also to manage traffic conditions. It can also be used to detect vibrations, perfect for industrial use. For instance, it can be used to predict when machines need maintenance.
There are a lot of possibilities with 6G. We’ve already seen how 5G is being used in factory automation, so imagine what 6G can do. However, we’re still quite a few years away from seeing 6G implemented, so we’ll have to wait until then to see the full benefits and advantages of the technology.
